after the Alsop family settled in Kansas, the Civil War began. Levi enlisted in the Third Regiment, Kansas Volunteers, Company "K", Cavalry, at Fort Lincoln on 1 September 1861, and was transferred rhe following year to Company "I", Sixth Regiment. He served honorably and bravely for the duration of his enlistment.

Family records indicate that Mary was born in Spotsylvania Co., Virginia 25 May 1830, rhe daughter of Pleasant Barber, who was also born in Spotsylvania Co., and his wife Sarah Markey, who was born in Germany. Mary continued to live in Bronson Co. after the death of her husband and life appeared to be rather prosperous. Records reveal that in her final years, she was able to help her children financially by managing her affairs in a businesslike manner. In the 1900 Federal census, Mary related to the enumerator that she had had nineteen children and that eleven of them ware still living. She left a will dated 1 July 1902, in which she left an equal share other estate to her nine living children and one share to May, daughter other deceased son Andrew J. Alsop.

Mary M. Alsop died 26 July 1902, and was buried in the family burial site along side other husband. The following photo shows Mary standing outside of the front door of her farm home on the porch with her sons, daughters, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. It is believed that Virgil Alsop is the boy on the front row, left end.


Pleasant Alsop the eldest son of Levi and Mary Alsop moved to California in his later life, although his reason for the relocation and his connection to this area is as yet unknown. He was living in Alameda County, California when his death occurred. He had also lived in B'utte Co., California where probate records were filed.

The next son born to Levi and Mary Alsop was Samuel Fielding Alsop who was the father of four children who reached adulthood and the following children who died as infants: Oliver Alsop, died 21 June 1880, age 10 months, 9 days; Viola J. Alsop, died 13 June 1883, age 5 months, 8 days; and Edmond R. Alsop, died 20 June 1883, age 1 year, 9 months. These three infants are buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery near Bronson.
