James and John Alsop of Derbyshire
James Alsop, Sr., and wife, name unknown, had a son James Alsop, Jr., who was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England ca. 1770. Glossop, both a village and the parish in which the village is found, is located in the north west corner of Derbyshire just inside the border. It is on the main A57 road between Manchester and Sheffield. The ancient parish of Glossop was one of the largest in the county as it covered a lot of the rural areas.
The marriage of James Alsop, Jr., and Sarah Bowden occurred on 4 August 1799, at Glossop in Derbyshire. The children of James and Sarah, all born in Glossop, were Hannah, born 19 Nov. 1803; John, born 18 July 1805; James, born 30 September 1807; Ann, born 6 March 1810; Alvin, born 17 September 1811; Millicenr, baptized 12 Sept. 1814; Nancy, born 1818;
and Sarah, baptized 19 April 1820. A George Alsop, born 1799, in Glossop and baptized 1 Jan. 1800, was a son of James and Sarah according to some records, but alternate records claim that the mother was Martha Platt.
Alvin Alsop son of James and Sarah Bowden Alsop married on 13 January 1836, in Glossop, Derbyshire, Jane Sandham, born 1807, at New Mills. They were the parents of Sarah Hannah Alsop, born 1836; Harriet Alsop, born 1838; John Alsop, born 1840; and George B. Alsop, born 1846. The English census of 1841 reports Alvin as living in Glossop and working as a cotton weaver. In 1851 he was living on Chapel St. in Howard
