IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FIREARMS CONTROL ACT

Recently some media reports were published on the implementation of the Firearms Control Act, 2000, Act no. 60 of 2000.  Some of these reports are incomplete and may confuse firearm owners.

The correct information is as follows:

All firearms licences issued in terms of the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1969, are still valid!!!
Although the Firearms Control Act, 2000 has been approved, only certain sections of the Act have been implemented.
The Firearms Control Act, 2000 requires that all existing firearm licenses must be renewed in terms of this act.  The perception that firearms licences
must be renewed before March 2004 is incorrect.  The renewal of existing firearms licences will take place over a period of five years.
Renewal will take place (depending on birth dates) within these periods:

          Jan - March           - 2005
          Apr - Jun               - 2006
          Jul - Sept              - 2007
          Oct - Dec               - 2008

SAPS is busy with a process to accredited institutions and organizations such as Hunting Associations, Persons who provide training in the use of
firearms, Game hunters (Professional hunters), Persons who conduct business in hunting, etc.

Persons who will apply for a license, will have to undergo training with a accredited training institution.  After successful completion of the training, the
institution will issue the person with a training certificate which is a prerequisite to obtain a competency certificate.  This certificate is issued by the SAPS
Central Firearms Control Register (depends on criminal record, etc).  The competency certificate will be valid for five years.

Owners can apply for accreditation as a business (must be a member of a Organization) and need to supply:

          Proof of membership
          Constitution of organisation
Proof of ownership of farm or letter of confirmation of managing a game farm.

Hunters from foreign countries will still be able to obtain import/export permits at the airports as in the past.  (The "21 days-issue" is only for collectors
or other organizations importing firearms into the Country)

For any further questions please don't hesitate to ask, if I don't know the answers, I'll try my best to find out!!

  For our friends….

Interested in becoming a member of the Northern Game Farmers Organisation - The official mouthpiece for all farmers in Mpumalanga, Gauteng,
