I know that a lot of FOC members will be saddened to hear of his passing, for his excellent morse on the bands was a joy to listen to. I know that Dennis Ex G3MXJ came and visited you both a few years ago and I think ran a Marathon from your place.
Vidi was the one who passed the message on to us all and guess it will be a hard act to follow in Roy’s footsteps.
On behalf of all members of FOC, please accept our deepest sympathy in your sad loss and our thoughts are with you and the family at this sad time

ROY STRETTON LARSEN
We share in the sadness of the loss of Uncle Roy. He was as close a friend to Dad as only two brothers can be, and his unexpected death will be particularly keenly felt by Dad. We used to enjoy Uncle Roy's company whenever we were together at Salbu. We hope that the legacy he left in his children will grow to develop fruit to the glory of God.
This short note cannot possibly offer consolation in your deep grief, except to the measure of knowing that we also will miss Uncle Roy even from so far away, and are thinking about his family during this sad time.

As we look deeply within, we understand our perfect balance. There is no fear of the cycle of birth, life and death. For when you stand in the present moment, you are timeless.

My Dad. You have given me everything that was in your power to give, all my life. They say that you cant choose your family, but you did choose me to be your daughter and we loved each other instantly and whole-heartedly. You adopted me and made me yours in everything you did. Your big heart was your most special gift to me, your incredible capacity to love, and your generosity.
You have been with me through thick-and-thin, supporting me always, devoting your time and your love at every opportunity. I know you know how much I love you and how terribly I will miss you. You are forever in my heart daddy, my rock, my friend.
I love you.

ROY STRETTON LARSEN
To my beloved husband, may your beautiful soul rest in heavenly peace. In our short 8 years of this life together,
we have shared beautiful times always to be remembered. I came into your life and supported you through the 8 years of being such a brave man, knowing that you had an aggressive cancer. I will always miss you and cherish our wonderful life together. Your loving wife.

“I’m going to die with cancer; not because of it.”
ROY STRETTON LARSEN
Roy was a very special person and holds a special place in my heart. We met when he was made my boss in 1984 and I
think it would be true to say we became good friends. He was a wonderful boss and I would not have got to where I did without his support.
Strangely, since I came back to the UK I hadn't been in contact with him for a few years, but just a few months ago I found your family website and found his email address. I wrote to him and he came back to me with all his news and how happy he was with his life. I was pleased that his last years were spent with someone who made him happy and that they enjoyed their life together. I don't think there is anyone who could say they didn't like him he was such a jolly person. I remember him having his first heart attack and how he didn't even realise it.
I wish I could be there to pay my respects but of course that's not possible.
I think that if he had to choose a way to die it would have been the way it was, and I think that we should be glad that he didn't have to suffer because I know that when he first found out about his cancer that was what worried him most.
His memory will always be with me.

Roy was my only sibling and, after 70 precious years, I am having some difficulty coming to terms with the fact that he is no longer with us. Roy and I shared a common intrest in amateur radio and over all the years we were only a 'touch of the Morse key' apart.
You may like to know a bit more about Roy's ham radio background.
The LARSEN cousins Johan Thorvaldsen (ZS5B), Gustav Larsen (ZS5DN) and Sivert "Wireless Windy" Larsen (ZS5BE) were all dedicated radio amateurs and established experimental "ham" radio stations in Natal. Windy's receiving station was licensed in 1924 and the transmitting station on April 13, 1926. Windy's first callsign was A7Q to become 3BE then ZT5S and later ZS5BE.
Our late uncle 'Wireless Windy Larsen' (ZS5BE) taught me to send and receive Morse code on a post office double sounder. We did not realise that my younger brother Roy was not only listening but learning at the same time. When Roy had his turn on the key our uncle said that he was going to be a 'first class telegraphist'. Roy was about six years old at the time and had difficulty spelling even three letter words. But he could send from a book and copy what was sent both in his head and on paper.
Cousin Gustav died on the 22nd of August 1947 and, a few years later, his station callsign and equipment passed on to myself David Larsen and my younger brother Roy. The Natal callsign ZS5DN is still held by Roy.
Due to his Morse Code proficiency Roy (ZS6QU) was first licensed, as a amateur radio second operator, at the age of 16 and operated under the call ZS5DN/2. He soon become recognised as a first class CW operator on both the local and DX bands. Roy could gather callsigns out of a pileup with incredible accuracy and he read almost any 'fist'. He remained an active CW operator up until time of his death at aged 70 years and 5 months. Roy, along with Vidi and Al, was proud to be a member of the First Class CW Operators Club (FOC).

Dad, on behalf of all of your heartbroken kids, we know that this is the way you wanted to go, quick with no fuss, in your home. We will all be eternally grateful for everything that you have done for us and the life that you have provided full of opportunity and promise.
We miss you.
